1. Ask, ask, ask. The world of Spirit can do nothing if we do not ask for their presence and help. Although our guides are always with us, since we are in the physical world and they are not, we need to ask to become aware of their presence in order for them to become present to us. And we need to ask for help and guidance – they do not interfere, and only assist if we ask them to. If someone in the physical world were here to help and serve you, they would wait for you to ask. Guides are the same.

2. Practice placing your focus on your inner world. Most of us are trained at an early age to focus outside of ourselves on the physical world rather than internally, and to look outside of ourselves for the answers rather than trusting our intuition. But you have answers within you; all you need to do is look within and learn to trust the information you find.

3. In meditation, extend your conscious awareness around you 360 degrees. When we’re in human form on the earth plane, we tend to focus almost exclusively on what we can see with our eyes, which only encompasses 140-180 degrees of our reality. But our guides usually remain to the side or slightly behind us in our energy field, and by increasing your awareness of your energy field all the way around your body rather than just in front of you, you can become more aware of their presence.

4. Listen for a voice, and open your senses in every way to connect with your guides. Many people expect to “see” their guides, because humans are so used to relying on our vision in the physical world, but some of us have stronger clairaudience (hearing) or clairsentience (sensing) than clairvoyance (seeing) abilities. Guidance can come through any of the senses. Sometimes even a recurring smell or taste can alert you to the presence of a guide.

5. Work with others – join a development circle, gather some like-minded friends, or get a psychic reading with the specific intention to become aware of your guides. Often, because other people see you from a much different perspective than you see yourself, they will notice features or characteristics of your guides that can be helpful to you in getting in touch with them. A development circle can be informal, just a few friends getting together and trying one thing or another, as long as the intention is clear, you ask for the highest and best information, and you surround yourselves with light to protect yourselves. Though we all have guides, and we all have psychic ability, like any other skill or ability it takes practice and experience over a period of time to become proficient.

Always protect yourself before you work – surround yourself with white light, or protect yourself in whatever way works best for you. Ask that only the highest and best information comes through. When you receive guidance, ask yourself if it feels true for you. If it feels wrong, it may not be coming from a higher being. If it feels innately right, you’re probably in touch with your guides.

Sometimes guides appear in dreams – if you have a particularly powerful dream, ask yourself when you awaken who was involved, what was happening, and how you felt in the situation.

Once you have connected with your guides, it’s important to develop and build on the connection. Keep going to development circles or take a class, or just spend a few moments a day in meditation with your guides. Guides are like friends: you need to make an effort to stay in contact, to let them know you appreciate their help, to say thank you. I know one medium that connects with her guides at the end of the day before she goes to sleep, even if she hasn’t done any psychic work that day.

Your guides are always with you. If you consciously intend to connect with them, and ask for that connection, you will find it when the time is right. Good luck! And may the light be with you
